For a successful job interview.

Every person, after completing their studies, gradually enters the job market and begins the job hunt, ideally for the perfect job if possible. Certainly, studies provide the necessary tools and knowledge for each field, however, in a hiring process, there are many factors at play. The job search process is not an easy task and each step is a significant chapter that requires extensive analysis. However, below, emphasis will be placed on the interview stage.

It is a stage of crucial importance, as each candidate has a limited time to prove that they are the most suitable for the position among many others. Factors such as stress and awkwardness can be fatal. Thus, proper preparation as well as knowledge of specific interview skills increase the chances of being hired.

Preparation before the interview:

Preparation before the interview is of crucial importance, as it will enable the candidate to be ready, feel more confident, and eliminate anxiety about the process.

  • It is important for the candidate to know themselves, what knowledge, skills, and abilities they can leverage for this position. Special attention should be paid to the required qualifications and abilities and a correlation should be made with those of the candidate.
  • It is essential to gather information about the company/organization, such as its position in the market, the products or services it offers, the nature of the offered job position and its prospects, the offered salary, etc. All companies post relevant information on their website. This way, the opportunity to develop presentation strategies for the candidacy is provided.
  • Preparation of a portfolio, which will include all documents that may have already been sent to the company (resume, degrees, etc.). The candidate must have them with him during the interview and, of course, be able to provide more information about what is mentioned in the resume or the other documents.
  • Preparation of stories from experiences of previous work, internships, volunteer work, which demonstrate horizontal skills (soft skills). For example, managing a difficult situation, taking initiative, teamwork, a mistake that taught something positive, etc.

During the interview:

  • In the interview, a positive attitude enhances self-image and confidence. Once the interview is arranged, it means that the resume has sparked interest. Thus, the candidate should be optimistic and show that the interview will indeed be successful. Be careful with exaggerations!
  • Particular importance should be given to appearance; an ideal professional appearance is modest without excesses in clothing or hair.
  • Arrival at the interview location 15 minutes before the scheduled time.
  • The candidate must be able to present his strengths and achievements as well as answer questions regarding the negative aspects of his personality and professional career.
  • He should refer to “successes” and “accomplishments” that are relevant to the specific job position and demonstrate his ability to meet the high demands of the job.
  • It is also good for him to ask questions, but he should listen carefully! This may be the most important skill: to understand not only what the interviewer says but also their style and body language they use.
  • If any question is unclear, they should not hesitate to ask for clarification rather than respond with ambiguity and haste.
  • It is very important not to interrupt the person opposite them and certainly not to become overly familiar, even if the interviewers try to encourage that.
  • Lies should be avoided, especially those that can easily be uncovered, and under no circumstances should there be any mention of accusations against the previous employer/director.

Competition is increasing more and more. The selection of the candidate is now judged on the details. Interviewers aim to identify the most suitable candidate and are trained and experienced to see beyond the words and reactions of the interviewees. The consultant can assist in preparing for the interview to increase the chances of success and not only by discussing the process.

They have knowledge and exercises (e.g., role-playing, practicing common questions, non-verbal communication) at their disposal, which will help in gaining familiarity and confidence for the entire process!
